Department of Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary branch of Biology. It is the development and utilization of Biological processes, forms and systems for obtaining maximum benefits to human being and other forms of life. The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2002 (Undergraduate degree), 2003 (Postgraduate degree) and 2008 (Ph.D.) with a vision to make an impact in providing quality education; technology-based training, innovation, and services to the society.

We believe in promoting a practical and knowledge-based approach. The course deals with theoretical as well as practical based detailed study of basic concepts in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Cell Biology and Molecular Biology. It also involves study of advanced techniques like Animal Tissue Culture, Plant Tissue Culture, Biophysics and Genetic manipulations for industrial and other purposes. The lab is equipped with the latest instruments, Molecular Biology, Plant Tissue Culture and Animal Tissue Culture laboratories which are used by the faculty and students for the various projects which are carried out during the curriculum.

The faculty members are competent and actively involved in research activities. They are encouraged to update their knowledge by attending workshop and seminars. The Department conducts various activities for the students viz. Poster competitions, food fest, Bio rangoli, events under Pravah and Science Associations. The students are encouraged the take part in various activities in and outside the college. The visits are arranged in various institutes like NIRRH, ACTREC, BARC etc.

The Department has a rich and vibrant research culture. There are 10 seats for Ph.D in Biotechnology. Till date 14 students have completed their PhD. In the past 5 years, 7 students have completed their Ph.D. in Biotechnology and 2 are pursuing their Ph.D. One Major Project (UGC) and Four Minor Research Projects (University of Mumbai) have been completed.
