Best Practices (2019 - 2020)

Describe at least two institutional best practices

Best Practice 1: Organizing Series of workshops and training programs to strengthen the Autonomy:

Goal:
To understand wider scope and perspective of Autonomy and share the best practices for the holistic development of students.
Content:
Being an Autonomous College, special efforts were taken to promote quality education as a whole. Various workshops and training programs were planned to improve the quality of education.
Practice:
The following workshops and training programmes were organized during 2019-20.

  • Prof. Beheruz N. Sethna, President Emeritus and Regents' Professor of Business, Richards College of Business, University of West Georgia, Carrollton, USA, conducted workshop on ‘Statistical Analysis’ on 12th June, 2019.
  • A Guest lecture was organised on ‘National Education Policy (NEP)’ on 1st August, 2019. Dr. Vijay Khole, Former Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai was invited for the same.
  • Department of Physics organized a workshop on ‘Optics’ under CE Scheme from 16th to 21st September 2019.
  • Intercollegiate Science Festival PRAVAH was organized on 18th - 19th December, 2019.
  • B. K. Birla College (Autonomous), Kalyan jointly with Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla (Under its UGC-IUC Centre) organized a 2 Day Workshop on ‘Autonomous Colleges in India: The Road Ahead’ on 7th - 8th January, 2020 at Century Bhavan, Worli, Mumbai. This workshop helped and provide direction and for motivation and guide HEIs to achieve newer heights of glory and excellence. 25 Autonomous Colleges from all over the country and 25 from Maharashtra and University of Mumbai were participated in the workshop and shared their ‘best practices, vision and suggestions for future growth’. Eminent experts from academics, officials from Government, UGC, RUSA, University, etc. have presented their views in the workshop.
  • One Day workshop on Advanced Tools in Microsoft was conducted on 15th January, 2020.
  • Department of Chemistry organised a National Conference on Recent Advances in Chemical and allied Sciences (RACAS-2020) organized by B. K. Birla College of Arts, Commerce and Science (Autonomous), Kalyan on 18th January, 2020.
  • Two days National level workshop on I-SENSO Robotics was jointly organized by Department of Computer Science and Build my project with TECHFEST IIT, Bombay & Make X, International Kalyan from 27th - 28th January, 2020
  • A Workshop on Artificial Intelligence organized by Department of Information Technology on 8th February, 2020.
  • A Workshop on Cyber Security Awareness organized by Department of Computer Science on 20th February, 2020.
  • Webinar on RT-PCR- a Diagnostic Test for COVID-19 organized by Department of Microbiology and School of Paramedical Sciences on 13th May, 2020
  • Department of English organized an International webinar titled, ‘Gender and Race Burden in African-American Literature’ was organized on 1st June, 2020. Dr. Eugene Ngezem, Full Professor, Department of English, Clayton State University, USA was the resource person. Approximately 2000 participants attended the webinar on digital platform of Microsoft Teams and Facebook.
  • IQAC organized a webinar on ‘Education Technology for Learning - e-Learning’ by Dr. Vasudha Kamat, Former Vice Chancellor, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai on 8th June 2020 for faculty members of College and Colleges under Paramarsh Scheme of UGC. The session covered importance of e-Leering material like mobile learning, learning management system, MOODLEs, Google drive, Padlet, Pixton, mind maps, etc.
  • Board of Examinations of B. K. Birla College (Autonomous), Kalyan organized a 2-Day online workshop on ‘Scientific Approach to Student Evaluation’ for the faculty members of the college on 9th and 10th June 2020 under the guidance of Prin. Ashok Pradhan, Former Vice Chancellor, YCMOU, Nashik and Dr. Naresh Chandra, Director (Education), BKBCK. Dr. Anuradha Deshmukh, Former Professor & Director, Centre for Collaborations & Special Initiatives, YCMOU was the resource person to guide the faculty members on different aspects of Evaluation.
  • Department of Management Studies and Economics organized an International webinar on ‘The Ingredients of Transformational Leadership’ by Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, President Emeritus, and Regents' Professor of Business, Richards College of Business, University of West Georgia was organized by on 19th June 2020 on digital platform of Microsoft Teams.
  • B. K. Birla College (Autonomous) Kalyan and B. K. Birla Public School Kalyan jointly organized a Webinar on ‘National Education Policy - 2020’ on 3rd August, 2020. Hon’ble Dr. Vasudha Kamat, Former Vice Chancellor, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai & Member, Committee delivered a talk on ‘Draft National Education Policy’.
  • The College in association with Mpower Foundation jointly organized webinar on ‘Importance of Mental Health Awareness’ on 13th August, 2020 for Staff and Students.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required:
Issues were faced for encouraging students and to motivate teachers for their active involvement while organizing various programs specifically on virtual platform. Also, the transitional period from offline to online mode was little difficult.

Best Practice 2: Proactive preparedness to upgrade onto LMS

Goal:
To facilitate the students and faculty members to virtual platform to meet the learning needs and to equip them with online learning.
Content:
To achieve better learning outcome for students and to transform classroom online, we provided a digital platform of Microsoft Teams to the faculty members that would help them to make teaching learning more meaningful and interactive in future. An initiative had been taken to organize 15 days special training session for teachers on ‘Microsoft Office 365’ in the month of April. This helped our teachers to explore the new pedagogy.
Practice:
The 15 days Training Sessions was organized by ‘Juana Technologies’ for faculty members. The details are as follows:

  • Webinar on ‘SharePoint Forms PowerApps’ was conducted on 17th April, 2020
  • A session on ‘Teams and Planner’ was conducted on 18th April, 2020
  • Webinar on ‘OneNote’ was conducted on 19th April, 2020
  • Training on ‘Outlook’ was conducted on 20th April, 2020
  • Webinar on ‘Collaboration’ was conducted on 21st April, 2020
  • Training on ‘Windows’ was conducted on 22nd April, 2020
  • Webinar on ‘Word’ was conducted on 23rd April, 2020
  • A session on ‘MS PowerPoint’ was conducted on 24th April, 2020
  • Training on ‘Create Videos using PowerPoint’ was conducted on 25th April, 2020
  • A session on ‘MS Excel’ was conducted on 26th April, 2020
  • Training on ‘MS Excel- Dynamic Arrays’ was conducted on 27th April, 2020
  • Webinar on ‘MS Excel- Power Query’ was conducted on 28th April, 2020
  • Training on ‘MS Excel- Power Pivot’ was conducted on 29th April, 2020
  • A session on ‘PowerBi’ was conducted on 30th April, 2020

Similarly, training sessions for students to make them aware about the new pedagogy and participate actively in new online platform of learning were organized.

  • Juana Technologies organized a Microsoft Training for Junior College Teachers and Students on 22nd May, 2020.
  • Department of Information Technology organized a ‘Flipped Learning Pedagogy - Out-of-Class Activity’ on 24th May, 2020.
  • Department of Computer Science and Information Technology conducted a session on Microsoft Teams Training on Teams live on 3rd July, 2020.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required:
Students from remote areas faced problem related to internet connectivity. We shared them link of recorded lectures along with study materials, so that they could learn in online mode also.
