Profile

About the department
Since its inception year 1978, the department offers Graduate programs in the subject of Microbiology. It is also a university recognized centre for M.Sc. (By Papers), M.Sc. (By Research); Ph.D. (Microbiology). The department also conducts Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MSBTE recognized).

Department of Microbiology is supported by UGC-Star Status The Department has introduced the following two New- age programs from A.Y. 2021-22:

  • M.Sc. Microbiology (Industrial Microbiology)
  • B.Voc. Medical Laboratory Technology (UGC sanctioned program under NSQF)
Salient Features
Overall Student Development:
The students are taught to focus on a systematic approach for experimental analysis, need of accuracy, planning, labelling in practicals. Students are also taught language skills to answer indirect questions on basic concepts and applications. A sense of discipline is inculcated in students for referencing, self-study and perseverance. Students are also encouraged to undertake various projects, under the DBT Star Status, at UG level, to build up research temperament.

The department conducts events like Sukshmavakash, to develop soft skills as well as leadership qualities amongst students. These activities include poster and innovative model making, which helps the students to develop a problem-solving attitude. Various guest lectures by scientists and eminent personalities are conducted regularly to keep the students updated about the recent scientific developments. Educational visits to research institutes and industries are conducted for B.Sc. and M.Sc. students.

The students are also encouraged to undertake internships and to participate in various summer training programs. Two F.Y.B.Sc. students were selected for the NIUS program arranged by HBCSE (TIFR), in the academic year 2018-2019. Every year we have few students with INSPIRE scholarship
Well- equipped Laboratories:
The department has one UG and two PG labs, along with one preparatory room. Besides the basic equipment, the lab is also equipped with instruments such as UV Spectrophotometer, cooling centrifuge, rotary vacuum evaporator, ultrasonic baths, lab scale fermenter, temperature regulated incubators and more.
